Understanding Repairs
Hardware Replacement
Hardware Replacement
Old boots with loose hardware? Nicks Boots offers a full hardware replacement service. That means that if you had your eye on another color or wanted to try out front lacing zippers, you can. Front zippers are only compatible with all eyes. Available upon inspection depending on structural integrity of the surrounding leather.
Heel replacement
Heel replacement
Nicks Boots offers a heel replacement service for our boots. The heel cap replacement is a lower cost option for those who just need a new rubber cap rather than replacing the heel entirely. The height of the heel or profile cannot be changed during this process.
If you have begun to wear through the leather stacks on your heel as well as the rubber, it is time for the full replacement. The heel base is the stack of leather between the heel cap and outsole of the boot. We cannot alter the shape of the heel profile when adding a new heel base or cap. Heel height can sometimes be changed when replacing the heel base upon inspection.
Resole
Resole
A resole will replace the outsole and heel base (If applicable) of the boot. One line of stitching is added during the resole process. The midsole of the boot is not replaced during the resole process. While minor repairs can be accommodated alongside the resole, significant alterations may not be feasible. Please note that the prices provided for standard resoling and rebuilding are estimates and additional charges may apply if further work is required.Â
Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for a customer to bring in their boots for a simple resole, only to discover that the boots require far more extensive repairs. When assessing boots for a resole, several critical factors need to be considered to ensure the integrity and longevity of the footwear. First, we examine the interior footbed for signs of dry cracking, as a compromised footbed can tear off during the repair process. We also assess the vamp to determine how much material is left and if it's feasible to stitch another line on the welt. Additionally, we inspect the uppers for dry cracking and loose stitch lines, which can indicate weakened areas that need attention. The condition of the hooks and eyes is also checked to ensure they are secure and functional. Lastly, we verify that the heel is firmly attached to the midsole, as a loose heel can lead to instability and further damage. By thoroughly evaluating these aspects, we can provide a more accurate assessment and ensure that the boots are restored to their optimal condition.
Rebuild
Rebuild
Nicks Handmade Boots specializes in the meticulous craft of rebuilding boots. This intricate process entails the careful removal of the outsole, midsole, and lowers of the boots, enabling a comprehensive restoration. However, it's important to note that not all boots are suitable for rebuilding, as the feasibility largely hinges on the condition of the uppers. As part of the rebuild, the tongue of the boots can also be replaced, ensuring a thorough rejuvenation of the footwear. With a dedication to craftsmanship and attention to detail, Nicks Handmade Boots commits to breathing new life into well-loved footwear, offering a bespoke solution for those seeking to extend the lifespan of their favorite pairs.
While many boots can be successfully rebuilt, there are certain limitations to what can be restored. Slip-on styles such as Renegade and Chelsea boots are not candidates for rebuilding due to their unique construction. Additionally, if the uppers are in very poor condition and unable to support new stitch lines, the boots cannot be effectively repaired. Boots made with soles or leather that are no longer in stock also pose a challenge; however, customers may choose a different sole or leather that closely matches the original. Lastly, we only rebuild boots from Pacific Northwest manufacturers, including Nick’s, White’s, Frank’s, and JK’s. Boots from other brands do not qualify for our rebuilding services, ensuring we maintain our high standards of craftsmanship and material compatibility.
